The Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act, introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, would put a windfall profits tax on Big Oil and use the profits to send a check to every American to help offset high energy prices. This is much-needed legislation that will begin to curb the profiteering that has helped drive steep price increases that are crushing consumers.

Please support the Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act to help consumers with high energy prices.

Since the beginning of the year, the value of shares currently held by the CEOs of just eight leading fossil fuel companies has increased by nearly $100 million.

While consumers are getting hammered by high gas prices and spiraling energy costs linked to the crisis in Ukraine, top fracking executives are raking in billions by hiking gas prices and pushing for more dangerous drilling and fracking. Enough is enough. It’s time that oil and gas companies pay their fair share to lower prices for consumers.

The Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act would put a 50% tax on the difference between the current price and the average price of a barrel between 2015 and 2019, roughly $66 a barrel. It’s estimated this could raise around $35-40 billion a year. This revenue would then go directly to consumers, just like the COVID stimulus checks did, to provide some immediate relief from rising prices at the pump.

The Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act will begin to curb the profiteering that has helped drive steep price increases that are crushing consumers. High prices have a particularly hard impact on low-income families who are already struggling to make ends meet and are often on the frontlines of pollution and the climate crisis.
