The Conshohocken Borough Council is preparing to sell our sewer system. They've had the system assessed, requested proposals, and have recieved three bids - including two corporate water giants: Aqua America and American Water.
Selling our sewer system will come with a heavy price for Conshohocken residents. Privatization of our wastewater systems typically leads to skyrocketing rates, decreased quality of service, and loss of transparency and accountability. Private companies are responsible to their shareholders first, not the community, and will put their profits ahead of our needs.
These companies have offered millions of dollars for the sewer system, which Conshohocken says is needed to fund road repairs. Selling assets to cover budget shortfalls in the short-term leaves our community desperate in the future, and these private companies have the right to recoup all of that money through rate increases!
