Tell Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature to support SB 1486, legislation to shut down Aliso Canyon!
Governor Newsom has long promised an expedited closure of the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility, a promise that meant shutting Aliso earlier than Governor Brown's proposed timeline of 2027. However, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is going in the wrong direction! The CPUC wants to close Aliso Canyon in 2035 and recently voted to increase the size of the storage facility.
The CPUC needs to be held accountable and it's up to Governor Newsom and the Legislature to act!
SB 1486 would:
- Put a moratorium on Aliso Canyon use, making it an asset of last resort (emergency use only)
- Shut down Aliso Canyon no later than 2027
- Protect workers affected by the shutdown, ensuring they are retained, retrained, transitioned or otherwise protected
- Require a gas reduction plan for 2030 and 2035 by LADWP, SoCal Edison and SoCalGas
- Establish a local energy reliability plan for extreme weather events
