Governor Shapiro: Stop Fracking in Pennsylvania!

Recently, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh, released the long-awaited results of studies on the health effects of living near fracking. The results were alarming: children living within a mile of well sites have a 5 to 7 times greater risk for developing rare childhood cancers.

Now that they know how fracking is jeopardizing our children’s health, our leaders should be taking immediate action to protect us. But so far, they have remained silent. That can't continue.

Pennsylvania needs to stop fracking. The recent Pennsylvania Department of Health and University of Pittsburgh study shows that children living within a mile of a well pad have significantly higher rates of rare cancers. It also shows an even higher chance of asthma complications and hospitalizations for people living within 10 miles of fracking. That's an unacceptable level of risk. The time to act is now.

The findings of this study are truly alarming. Combined with previous revelations that the Pennsylvania Department of Health failed to adequately respond to fracking-related health complaints, Pennsylvania residents are facing a tragic situation. As our governor, it is your responsibility to address this public health disaster and put the needs of Pennsylvanians above the desires of the oil and gas industry.

There should be no delays when it comes to protecting our children’s health. It is distressing to know that fracking is impacting our communities and our leaders have not taken action to protect us.
