Congress: Support the WATER Act!

Trump’s budget plan for next year proposes to cut the main source of federal funding for local water and sewer systems by 89 percent! His goal is to outright eliminate this support for safe and clean water, which would seriously endanger public health.

We need Congress to step up and safeguard federal support for safe water. The WATER Act is critical legislation that would fund water and sewage system repairs, create good jobs for over 1 million people, help stop sewage overflows, and make infrastructure fixes each year.

I urge you to co-sponsor and pass the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity, and Reliability (WATER) Act (H.R.3376 and S.1730), introduced by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, Congressman Ro Khanna, and Senator Bernie Sanders.

Affordable access to safe drinking water is non-negotiable. It's a human right. People shouldn't have to worry about whether their water is safe to drink or if they will have reliable service.

Yet since the 1970s, the federal government has slashed funding for water infrastructure upgrades, putting the health of entire communities in danger, with children being especially vulnerable.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s latest estimates are that at least $1.3 trillion is needed to upgrade our drinking water and wastewater systems over the next 20 years. Nothing short of renewed federal investment in our nation's water systems is going to help meet this challenge.

The solution is the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity, and Reliability (WATER) Act. This legislation would restore the federal government's commitment to our nation’s water infrastructure by providing a long-term, sustainable source of funding for safe, clean water. It also provides funding so that states, localities, and households can take real action to get per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS "forever chemicals"), lead, and other toxic substances out of drinking water.
