Great news: The Hochul administration denied the air quality permit for the Greenidge plant in the Finger Lakes, which is burning fracked gas for Bitcoin mining.

Now Governor Hochul must sign into law a bill establishing a moratorium on any new projects using fossil fuels for cryptocurrency mining.

Bitcoin mining relies on an extremely energy-intensive "proof of work" method of aunthentication. Globally, it uses more energy than some countries! The industry has made clear its intentions to fire up shuttered coal plants with fracked gas to power its operations. The Legislature passed the moratorium, and now it's up to Hochul to make it law.

Dear Governor Hochul,

Establishing an immediate moratorium on cryptocurrency mining powered by fossil fuels, while completing a comprehensive study of its impacts on the climate and the environment more broadly, is a prudent and necessary action.

I urge you to sign this bill into law NOW.

Sincerely,
