I am writing in support of a full factory farm moratorium as proposed in SB 85-1. The -3 amendments cannot be allowed to pass.

These amendments are unjust: by removing mega-dairies, the bill as amended sacrifices predominantly low-income communities and communities of color in eastern Oregon that are already struggling with nitrate-laden drinking water from mega-dairies and industrial food processing. Over the last few years, the Lost Valley Farm mega-dairy was shut down after racking up over 200 environmental violations within its first year of operations, and the proposed Easterday Farms mega-dairy has been mired in scandal since the beginning.

It’s very clear that the harm factory farms inflict on Oregon is not just a chicken issue. It’s appalling that the legislature would enact a moratorium on chicken factory farms while allowing mega-dairies to expand unchecked in parts of the state where they predominantly harm environmental justice communities.

It’s clear there is widespread support among Oregonians for a full factory farm moratorium. After the first public hearing on SB 85-1, 600 people submitted comments in support.

We cannot allow factory farms to proliferate unchecked across our state, especially when it’s so clear that Oregon does not appropriately regulate these industrial facilities. Oregon’s rural communities, our independent farmers, our air, water and special places, and our climate cannot wait.

Oregon needs a time-out on factory farms, and that must be a full factory farm moratorium as proposed in SB 85-1. Please support SB 85-1.
