When: Thursday, November 18 at 11 AM
Where: CA State Capitol Building, North Side, 1315 10th St, Sacramento, CA 95814
What: November 18th will mark the two year annviersary of Governor Newsom directing the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to shut down the SoCalGas Aliso Canyon gas storage facility and expedite pathways for closure.
Instead, the CPUC recently voted to EXPAND gas storage at Aliso Canyon, moving us in the opposite direction of a shut down. This is a tragic failure of leadership that puts communities at greater risk of health problems and disaster.
In Ventura, the CPUC is allowing SoCalGas to proceed with expanding a super-emitter gas compressor station without an Environmental Impact Report (EIR). This puts nearby residents and an elementary school in the blast zone. This is a clear example of why Governor Newsom needs to step in and direct the CPUC to protect public health, not SoCalGas wealth.
Finally, we'll shine a light on another egregious failure by the CPUC to follow through on LA City and County requests to shut down the Playa del Rey gas storage facility — the smallest but more dangerous SoCalGas storage field.
