Fossil fuel company Enbridge wants to expand its fracked gas infrastructure along the AIM pipeline that runs through New York.

This plan would include building out compressor stations and other dirty energy infrastructure — wreaking havoc on our air and climate, and directly contradicting the clean energy goals mandated by New York's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

While it's early days for the proposal right now, once an application with federal regulators moves forward, Enbridge may also need permits from at least one state agency.

Urge Governor Hochul and state legislators to oppose the Maple Fracked Gas Expansion and do everything in their power to ensure that this dirty pipeline expansion does not get approved in New York.

Dear Governor Hochul and State Legislators,

I urge you to do everything in your power to stop the Maple fracked gas expansion (dubbed “Project Maple”), including directing state agencies to withhold any permits needed to move this dangerous dirty pipeline project forward.

New York will not meet the goals mandated in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act if we continue to build any new fossil fuel infrastructure, including "Project Maple."

The proposal put forward by Enbridge would involve expanding fracked gas infrastructure along the Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline in New York, as well as compressor stations along the pipeline route. This multi-state pipeline expansion proposal would worsen the air quality of Environmental Justice communities along the pipeline route and deepen our dependence on fracked gas in New York.

Moreover, a portion of "Project Maple" would come precariously close to the decommissioning Indian Point nuclear plant. The close proximity of the pipeline expansion to radioactive contaminants and the increased flow of gas by this site would be incredibly dangerous to the region.

On top of that, the creation, transportation and release of fracked gas increases methane in our atmosphere, which is roughly 87 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide over a span of 20 years. We're already feeling the negative impacts of climate change throughout New York -- we must stop building out any new fossil fuel infrastructure.

Activists and local elected officials celebrated years ago when you stopped the Danskammer and Astoria NRG fracked gas plants from being expanded. We urge you to take the next step and stop "Project Maple." We cannot expand or build any new fossil fuel infrastructure if we are to achieve the goals mandated by our state’s climate law.

Please be vocal in your opposition to "Project Maple" and the expansion of any fracked gas projects in our state. And please direct our state agencies including the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Public Service Commission (PSC) to deny any permits needed for Enbridge to move "Project Maple" forward.
