The fossil fuel industry is pushing a bill in New Jersey that would hand over billions of dollars in subsidies for mis-named "Renewable" Natural Gas (RNG), paid for by New Jersey ratepayers. Despite what the industry claims, RNG is dirty energy that leads to hazardous and climate-harming air pollution.

Fortunately, our state lawmakers can choose a different path. Another bill, the Clean Energy Standard, would pave the way for 100% truly clean energy — if the necessary amendments are made to protect clean air, environmental justice communities, and in-state jobs.

I am writing about two pieces of legislation that have been introduced in the 2024-26 legislative session that provide very different visions of New Jersey’s energy future. I urge you to reject S2275/A1462 and its subsidies for dirty and expensive natural gas, and instead support amendments to strengthen S237/A1480 to protect clean air, environmental justice communities, and in-state jobs.

The RNG bill (S2275/A1462) would establish a program for utilities to use so-called "renewable" natural gas — which is dirty, climate-harming, and expensive gas — and to pass the additional costs of this expensive program on to New Jersey ratepayers, with limited oversight. This bill can’t be fixed by amendments. The use of dirty RNG in our state would unfairly hike consumers' electric and heating bills, increase emissions of co-pollutants, harm already overburdened environmental justice communities, and prevent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The Clean Energy Standard Bill (S237/A1480) aims to transition retail electricity in New Jersey to 100% clean energy sources by 2035 — but it still needs amendments to protect environmental justice communities and safeguard in-state jobs. If strengthened, this bill would pave the way for 100% truly clean energy. It would help avoid climate havoc, clean up air pollution, save ratepayers money and advance thousands of good-paying green jobs.

Please reject the unaffordable dirty RNG bill, and instead support amendments to strengthen the Clean Energy Standard bill to protect clean air, environmental justice communities, and in-state jobs.
