Take Action to Shut Down Line 5!

Mackinac Bridge in Michigan

Line 5 is a 63-year old set of twin pipelines that carry crude oil and natural gas under the Straits of Mackinac putting our Great Lakes at risk of a disastrous oil spill every day!

A 2014 University of Michigan study declared that the Straits of Mackinac is the "worst possible place" in the Great Lakes for an oil spill. The strong currents in the Straits would quickly move oil from a spill, putting our economy, public health, environment and Great Lakes quality of life in jeopardy. In September 2015, Enbridge conducted a spill response drill in the Straits and preliminary reports show that only 30 percent of the oil would be able to be recovered.

The U.S. Coast Guard Commandant testified before Congress in 2015 that the Coast Guard would be unable to respond effectively to an open water oil spill in the Great Lakes. Line 5 crosses through 11 tributaries in the inland portions; Michigan is at risk while being used as a shortcut. Attorney General Bill Schuette and Governor Snyder have the power to decommission this pipeline today

Please email Attorney General Bill Schuette and Governor Snyder and urge them to shut down Line 5. Some things, like our Great Lakes are too precious to risk.

Dear [Decision Maker],

Line 5 must be permanently decommissioned; allowing this ticking time bomb to stay in operation would be to the detriment of the Great Lakes and the countless people whose livelihoods depend on it.

Sincerely,
