A noxious gas blowout has been raging for nearly three months in Porter Ranch, California. It’s making people sick with toxic chemicals like benzene and toluene and forcing them from their homes. Not only is the gas hazardous to peoples’ health, but methane is a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide. With 110,000 pounds of methane gas spewing into the atmosphere every day, this leak is a full-fledged climate disaster. This crisis has now lasted longer than the 2010 BP Gulf oil spill, and it could take another month or more to stop the leak. Food & Water Watch has been working with residents and the local community group Save Porter Ranch to help force SoCalGas to pay for residents to relocate. Our collaboration has also been placing significant pressure on California Gov. Brown, who on the 75th day of the leak finally declared a State of Emergency. The ongoing health impacts to residents and the massive environmental consequences demand federal help. Sign below to tell President Obama to issue a State of Emergency and to direct EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy to shut down the Aliso Canyon Gas Storage Facility in Porter Ranch, CA.*Your contact information is required to deliver your messages to the EPA and President Obama.
